Horticulture

Horticulture enriches our lives through gardening and contributing fruits and vegetables to our diets; it improves our environment; it provides recreation in golf courses, parks, and landscapes; and it provides beauty to our homes and public spaces.  Careers in Horticulture combine art, science and technology to produce and maintain plants and landscapes.

Seven specialization areas offer a broad range of opportunities to prepare for a career in a horticulture profession. Horticulture faculty are dedicated to providing a world-class education. Five different student organizations provide opportunities for industry involvement, travel, and hands-on experiences.

Maradiaga Wins Second Place for Poster
Dalila Maradiaga won second place for her poster entitled "Comparing Riparian Woodlands in the Watersheds of Three Northeast Kansas Lakes"  at the 2012 Society of American Foresters National Convention recently in Spokane, Washington.  There were approximately 100 entries in the student category, and the award includes a small cash prize!  The award-winning poster can be seen on the third floor of Throckmorton, across from room 3036.  Her adviser is Charlie Barden.

K-State Horticulture Student Receives National Award
George Dille, junior in Horticulture - Landscape Design, was recently selected as a Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) Student Ambassador.  Dille is one of only eight students nationally to receive this recognition.  The Ambassadors began their term by being recognized at the recent PLANET Green Industry Conference and Expo in Louisville, KY, and then promptly went to work as liaisons between PLANET officers and staff and the thousands of green industry professionals who participated in the event. 
Thompson Wins First Place in Poster Competition
Cole Thompson won first place in the poster competition at the Crop Science Society of America - Turfgrass Division International Annual meeting in Cincinnati, October 21-24, 2012.
